Russia's Sberbank to Launch Crypto Trading and Custody Services by December 2026

Russia's largest bank is preparing to enter the crypto market in a major way. Sberbank, which controls roughly one-third of all banking assets in Russia, plans to launch regulated cryptocurrency trading, custody, and settlement infrastructure by December 1, 2026.

Key Fact: Sberbank's crypto services launch follows Russia's new digital asset law taking effect September 1, 2026.

What's Driving the Timeline

The rollout is tied to Russia's "On Digital Currency and Digital Rights" law, which takes effect September 1 and creates a licensing system for crypto trading, custody, and cross-border settlement. Licensed intermediaries will have until July 1, 2027 to fully comply. Sberbank's First Deputy Chairman Kirill Tsarev said the bank would roll out a crypto wallet first through its Sberbank Online and SberInvestments platforms, integrating the new services into its existing digital ecosystem.

A Digital Depository, Not Just a Wallet

According to Interfax, Sberbank's planned digital depository will record customer ownership of cryptocurrency and process most transactions outside public blockchain networks, while the bank separately manages active wallets for deposits, withdrawals, and transfers. First Deputy Chairman Alexander Vedyakhin said the bank intends to complete the required systems before the December deadline.

Key Stat: Retail investors face an annual crypto purchase cap of 300,000 rubles (~$3,800) under the new rules.

Limits and Restrictions

The new framework keeps some guardrails in place. Non-qualified retail investors must pass a knowledge test and stay within the 300,000 ruble annual cap. Domestic commercial transactions using cryptocurrency remain banned, though international settlements using crypto will be permitted for designated scenarios — a carve-out that matters as Western sanctions continue to reshape Russia's access to dollar- and euro-denominated payment channels.

Other Russian Banks Are Racing to Compete

Sberbank isn't moving alone. VTB and T-Bank are both developing their own digital custody platforms, and the Moscow Exchange has explored offering regulated crypto products as well. Sberbank has previously issued Bitcoin-linked structured bonds and completed a Bitcoin-backed lending pilot with miner Intelion Data.

Why It Matters

Sberbank's entry marks one of the clearest signs yet of a state-anchored crypto market taking shape in Russia, even as Western regulators remain gridlocked on comparable frameworks. Whether the platform functions purely as a retail on-ramp or also becomes a channel for cross-border settlement will likely draw scrutiny from Western regulators tracking sanctions compliance.
